Having MS can be sometimes stressful and sometimes depressing. When I was going through a rough stretch a few years ago - amidst a bad attack, unemployment, and snowballing bills - I began sessions with a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW.) This was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Coping with multiple sclerosis can be a real challenge. The symptom comes and goes, and it can place limitations on a person's ability to work, socialize, and just plain function. Add to the mix the fact that the disease ITSELF might cause depression and this creates a recipe for chronic depression/anxiety. So I meet with my therapist about once a month during the good times and once weekly during the difficult ones. This keeps me balanced and it also allows me to talk to an objective person. I plan goals and work on current roadblocks with my social worker. She also gives me logical insight into myself and my situation that family members and friends (and I) might not always see.

I'm very thankful that there are various types of therapists (social workers, licensed professional counselors, and psychologists) available. Since I am on an antidepressant, I also see a psychiatrist every few months to evaluate how the medication is working.

I firmly believe that psychological counseling is a lifesaver for me, and that people with MS should feel comfortable seeking out such a resource.
