Secret Lives of Musicians
When I first experienced optic neuritis, I was performing backstage with the Baltimore Opera in a production of Tannhäuser. I was blind in one eye, couldn’t drive, and was suffering from the effects of high doses of steroids. Not my best moment, but my colleagues were supportive.
Years later, when I did finally receive the official diagnosis of MS, I was having difficulties in performing my musical duties. Specifically, I could hardly hold my French horn up and had fingers which didn’t want to do their work. Aargh!!
